Saturday, March 23: Exodus 21– …

All these laws!  How hard it is, I thought, to regulate a society. Some of my reading reminded me of dealing with children. You have to be so literal and specific with kids. If you say, “No fighting!”, you then have to define what fighting is. I remember one time when our kids were young, we had to step in and set up some house rules to stop them from fighting. We drew up a family set of rules, but it took a few iterations to help them understand the kinds of behaviors we felt were unacceptable. It started with no fighting and hitting and the punishments for both. But next thing we know we are stopping another fight, but as we began to dole out the punishments, they said, “We weren’t hitting… we were just pushing!”
And our contract had to grow more detailed…
I felt like God was dealing with children (even though they were adults) who needed each scenario spelled out.
My mind spun to the NT and the question to Jesus about His summation of the Law. Two overarching commands, ‘Love the Lord God with everything you have’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’. Brilliantly simple, but anything from simplistic.
Love God, love all people…
Unfortunately, even boiled down to two understandable laws, I fall short regularly and repeatedly. How about you?
It is so obvious that I (and we) need a Savior.
Savor this thought as you go through today.  What a wonderful preparation this will be for worship tomorrow, when you get to join others in praising the One who saved us from our sins and loves us totally and unconditionally!
Alleluia… Amen!

Thank You, Lord. Thank You! Amen.
