Saturday, May 19: - Ezekiel 33 - Watchman.

Is there a more daunting job than that of the watchman? The word of the LORD came to me: "Son of man, speak to your countrymen and say to them: 'When I bring the sword against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman, and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet to warn the people, then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not take warning and the sword comes and takes his life, his blood will be on his own head. Since he heard the sound of the trumpet but did not take warning, his blood will be on his own head. If he had taken warning, he would have saved himself. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood´ (1-6).

As watchman, your diligence, your honesty and your integrity is on the line every moment you are on the job. And you are working on behalf of others.

Why is the watchman at his/her post? Because God wants His people to be safe. The watchman’s call will keep the people safe, when they heed the watchman’s call. The role of the watchman is yet another example of God caring for His people. Does God want His people to suffer in ignorance or willful disobedience? No, so God warns them through the watchman. 'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel (11)?

Who are the watchmen today? Those who point people to the Word of God, the ever present pure and perfect Word of God.

Heed God’s Word and you are safe. If you are living in ways outside of God’s Word, turn from your ways and live. This is the message of the watchman.

Listen to the watchman’s call. The watchman will point you to the Word, which will lead you to faith in Jesus…

Lord, I pray for watchmen, may they be faithful and true to You. May they be women and men of diligence, honesty and integrity, who speak what You first spoke, so that the people may be saved and safe. Amen.
