Thursday, May 9: Matthew 21– Half-truth misses the truth…

I have wondered for years how the crowds can hail Jesus one moment and then cry ‘crucify’ the next. It has always bothered me how quickly people can flip-flop.
Reading the Triumphal Entry account this morning I noticed something interesting. Toward the end we hear this brief exchange. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?" The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee" (10-11).
What I noticed this morning is that the people only got part of the picture. They saw Jesus as the prophet from Nazareth; they didn’t catch that He was God and God’s coming King.
Prophets, many times and this is particularly true for Jesus, were wonder-workers. Miracles often followed and confirmed them as prophets.  You can benefit from a prophet if you are the recipient of one of his/her miracles. Jesus healed and fed many, and people knew this.
Where prophets and miracle-works can help you, God’s coming King demands allegiance. Prophets and coming kings demand very different responses.
People were half right; Jesus was a wonder-working prophet. But He was also God’s coming King and God Himself. It seems to me that people got half the truth, but in doing so they missed the main or whole truth.
I wonder, do I sometimes catch part of God’s truth, and yet miss the ‘main’ truth? This is a scary thought, but one worth pondering and meditating upon.

Lord, help me to move beyond half truths to the whole truth about who You are and what You require of me.  Also, what You want from me and what You would have me do to advance Your kingdom and live Your message. This I pray through Jesus, Your Son and my Lord. Amen.
