Wednesday, April 17: Matthew 2– The provision of God to do the things of God …

As Matthew’s account unfolds it is obvious that the child Jesus was no ordinary child. Dignitary visitors from the east and all those dreams were directing the events so the child and His family are one step ahead of danger. Surely God is at work!
The piece that connected with me was the way God provided for the family and Jesus. Joseph was a simple man, like most in his day, a carpenter who likely lived with little or no life savings. What he earned was spent on food and necessities.
As the story unfolds, Joseph, Mary and Jesus hurriedly escape to Egypt so Jesus isn’t killed in Herod’s rampage against children. I wonder how is it that they can bankroll a trip like that? Travel and living for a number of years. Where does the money to support your escape come from?
No direct answer is given, but there is the Magi offering of gold, incense and myrrh. Those gifts surely could have provided for the family as they made their escape and then later helped them settle in Nazareth.
The text doesn’t say explicitly, but this is plausible. And it is certainly like God to provide, just in time, what is needed to do what He asks and directs.
I have never had Magi show up with expensive gifts, but over and over in my life God has provided what I have needed to do the things God asks me to do…
Have you known the provision of God to do the things of God? My hunch is you have. Ponder this for a moment or two…
Lord, You have always provided what I have needed to do Your will. Thank You, bless You and give me faith to trust You every day of my life… to follow You in faith and to do all that You ask me to do.
Thank You for the many ways and times I know You have provided what I have needed to do Your bidding. Thank You for providing,, period. For every good and perfect gift comes from You. Through my Lord Jesus, I pray. Amen.
